title The Importance of Ratifying and Implementing the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Report on Progress The presentation on the UN Special Rapporteur on Disability will focus on the meaning of ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by Governments. It will deal with the obligations such ratification entails for Governments in terms of implementation; the significance of the implementation in the lives of persons with disabilities. In particular, how implementing the Convention can help improve the situation of persons with disabilities living in poverty—considering that of 650million persons with disabilities in the world, more than 400 million live in developing countries and the majority of those live in poverty. It will also explore the responsibilities of organizations of persons with disabilities in ensuring, lobbying, advocating, advising, counselling governments in the priority areas as they see them within their own countries. As well as the importance of establishing partnerships with government officials and taking the issues of persons with disabilities to the highest levels of authority within a country. The presentation will also touch upon the Standard Rules for the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities and their relation to the Convention, and how they can be used as guidelines for implementation of the Convention. The Special Rapporteur will present some of the most significant findings from the Global Survey on Government Action on the Implementation of the Standard Rules for the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities, and how those results can be used by disabled persons organizations in their advocacy work. |
